What is a happyhome?

happy family

A happyhome is more than a place to live. It's the quality of connection we have with others that makes us feel "at home" no matter where we are. It's the comfort of knowing that we belong somewhere and we matter to someone.

A happyhome is built on a foundation of love, values and legacy. What we build inside of ourselves is what makes us strong and protects us, not what we build around us. Family science researchers have studied "protective factors" for many years - those things that inoculate our children against negative influences. They are communication, quality time together, family traditions, shared memories and values, and lots of love.

This list is no surprise to us. We instinctively know what we need to be doing to create the family life we want. The problem is not what, but how? How do we find the time in our "dizzybusy" world to stay focused on what we know in our hearts is important?

Once Upon a Family has made it easy. By weaving the scientifically proven "protective factors" into the simple power of family rituals and traditions built around holidays, we have created the 5 happyhome habits. They are:
  • Once a Day: Dinner Conversations
  • Once a Week: Family Fun Nights
  • Once a Month: Treasured Traditions
  • Once a Year: Your Family Story
  • Once in a While: Gifts of Love
These five simple habits will do for your family what regular exercise and 6 fruits and vegetables a day will do for your body: make you strong, protect you against the stressful world around you and help you live a happier, longer life.

No Nag Nirvana

Yes, wouldn’t that be like heaven? You walk around the house and without saying a word, backpacks, toys and clothes are picked up…dishes are cleared off the table and towels are hung back on the towel rack. Dirty clothes actually go into the dirty clothes basket and you no longer walk into the kitchen to [...]

The Power of Unexpected Kindness

The idea of Door Knob Drops came from my sister, Teri, who lives with her two boys in Moraga, California. One year there were several kids on their street that were graduating from some school or another; sixth grade, eighth grade or twelfth grade. Teri and her boys put together some very simple treats with [...]

What Would You Do?

Last night my boys, Dylan and Travis, were helping me cut out Bingo Boards and put together Bingo Button sacks. It was really late and I was trying to get everything photographed for this first Five in One Family Fun email. Normally they go to bed by 9:15 but it was 9:30 and I hadn’t [...]
