Hey everyone! School is just around the corner and my daughter is going to be starting FIRST grade! It is her first time at all day school and I want to make it super special for her. I would LOVE to hear about any special things that you do for your kids to celebrate the first day of school.

One special thing that I know I will be doing is writing special notes on napkins in her lunch box. It is one thing that my mom always did for us kids and it's a tradition that I am so excited to pass on to my daughter!

My kids start out by getting a Father's Blessing from Dad the night before. And then I always sneek a hand-stamped card into their backpacks wishing them a great first day and also a little treat like a new fun pencil or erasers( my kids LOVE stuff like that) or something like that. And then when we get to school we always take a first day of school photo.

We do a first day of school photo too. I also have heard from somewhere...sorry I forget where, so credit isn't due to me...that this lady has her children put their backpacks on their bedroom door knob on the night before the first day of school and the "Back-to-school" fairy comes for a visit and leaves school supplies inside their bags and a special treat. She of course could also leave her magic fairy dust.

I really like the Father's Blessing idea...my hubby is going to bring our daughter for her first day...after I get the first day of school photo of course and he is going to bring her out for a special breakfast and I am going to pick her up and think I will make her a special dinner.

Hello ~ 1) We have a class gathering the day before school starts with all the students in the class. We keep it simple and outside. EXA: Provide cupcakes to decorate and everyone brings their drinks. 2) We always have Friendly's ice-cream after school. There are always many friends from school that attend. BJ Goodwin

We started this tradition last year for Lindsey's first day of Kindergarten, and will continue it on Monday as she goes off to begin first grade. We simply buy the biggest, most red apple we can find (Lindsey picks it out) and I paint her grade on the front in white paint. The attached photo is from last year. I can only imagine what the expression on her face will look like in her teen years. One can only hope she will still be smiling!! Now we have a documented photo of what she wore to school on her first day, and our little apple tradition to go along!

We always have "Back to School Pancakes" for breakfast on the first day of school and take a photo of Thomas with his backpack and lunch box in hand in front of the door of our house (wherever we might be living!) for our Back to School Book. We of course always have him fill out the "When I grow up I want to be..." tradition card too. I've attached our photos from last year! We start school on Sept 2nd!

I have them wear the new outfit they got for the first day and we do the typical picture in the front yard. I then interview them when they get home and stick it in their scrapbook. I so the same interview at the end of the year.

No Nag Nirvana

Yes, wouldn’t that be like heaven? You walk around the house and without saying a word, backpacks, toys and clothes are picked up…dishes are cleared off the table and towels are hung back on the towel rack. Dirty clothes actually go into the dirty clothes basket and you no longer walk into the kitchen to [...]

The Power of Unexpected Kindness

The idea of Door Knob Drops came from my sister, Teri, who lives with her two boys in Moraga, California. One year there were several kids on their street that were graduating from some school or another; sixth grade, eighth grade or twelfth grade. Teri and her boys put together some very simple treats with [...]

What Would You Do?

Last night my boys, Dylan and Travis, were helping me cut out Bingo Boards and put together Bingo Button sacks. It was really late and I was trying to get everything photographed for this first Five in One Family Fun email. Normally they go to bed by 9:15 but it was 9:30 and I hadn’t [...]
