happyhome club

Congratulations as we enter into the second half of the happyhome challenge. Your challenge is to submit 12 traditions, one for each month, that you will celebrate during the coming year. For example: January: Bill’s birthday, February: Valentines Day, etc. Then, tell us about your favorite tradition in 150 words. If possible, dig out a picture of this favorite tradition dating back as far as you can find!

January: My birthday. (Girl's night out!)

February: My grandson's first birthday.

March: Spring break. Travel?

April: My sister's birthday. (Girl's night out!)

May: My cousin's birthday. (Girl's night out!)

June: My nephew's birthday.

July: My sister's birthday. (You guessed it!)

August: Barbecue. Fresh trout and fresh corn on the cob.

September: More birthdays. (One more girl's night out!) This month is also when our family tries to attend a fundraiser in a small mountain town about 2 hours away. The town was booming at the end of the 19th century but the railroad went through a neighboring town which essentially doomed Roseberry. My uncle began to restore the old town in the mid 1960's. He later restored and moved into a house that his father had helped build in the early 1900's. The ice cream social is held on the Saturday before Labor Day. They have demonstrations of old engines among other things. My dad used to have a trailer of small engines that he would run. He used them to pump water, grind wheat and make ice cream. The year after my father died several of his grandsons ran the engines. Last year none of them were available, so my sister and I did just the ice cream. The boys missed the tradition a vowed to make it a priority to be there next year. What a great family tradition.

October: Halloween. Do you ever get to old to enjoy this holiday?

November: Thanksgiving!

December: Christmas!

Christmas is my favorite holiday and we have many family traditions to help us celebrate. We start on Christmas Eve with a chili dinner at my Gram’s house with my parents, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, aunt and uncle, cousins and occasionally good friends. Every year we have a lively Chinese gift exchange. On Christmas day, we open presents at our home with our kids and have breakfast and then head to my parent’s house. Once everyone has arrived, we have a Christmas toast with Champagne (orange juice for the kids) and share our family blessings followed by a wonderful Christmas feast. My Mom makes the best homemade rolls and I always look forward to a slice of my Gram’s pumpkin pie for dessert. This Christmas toast picture is from about 14 years ago.

No Nag Nirvana

Yes, wouldn’t that be like heaven? You walk around the house and without saying a word, backpacks, toys and clothes are picked up…dishes are cleared off the table and towels are hung back on the towel rack. Dirty clothes actually go into the dirty clothes basket and you no longer walk into the kitchen to [...]

The Power of Unexpected Kindness

The idea of Door Knob Drops came from my sister, Teri, who lives with her two boys in Moraga, California. One year there were several kids on their street that were graduating from some school or another; sixth grade, eighth grade or twelfth grade. Teri and her boys put together some very simple treats with [...]

What Would You Do?

Last night my boys, Dylan and Travis, were helping me cut out Bingo Boards and put together Bingo Button sacks. It was really late and I was trying to get everything photographed for this first Five in One Family Fun email. Normally they go to bed by 9:15 but it was 9:30 and I hadn’t [...]
