Profile Information

A little bit about me:
I am a 54 year-old (no, young) mother of five, ages 9-28. I have worked most of my parenting life (28 years and 9 more to go) and know first hand how hard it is to balance work and family. I love baking (souflees are my specialty), dancing lessons (especially salsa and swing) and good movies (any kind but Rocky). My (ex) husband and I were never very lucky when it came to real estate, but we were very lucky with our children. They are all so different, each adding their own special touch to our family life. They bring us tremendous joy. We agreed that if something happened to the both of us, it would be ok. They have become so close that we know they would take care of each other.
Family members – names/ages/interests:
Candace, 28, is creative, vivacious and daring. She went bunge jumping with her cousins in France at 15, loves the trapeze and has been director of design at OUAF for 6 years.
Kevin, 24, is smart, hard-working and so seriously focused on his goals, but also has the most hilarious sense of humor. He lives in LA and works for a business consulting firm.
Sean, 20, is my very creative-but-I-hate-school kid. He spent three days over the holidays making a CD with 5 original songs - using his 9 year-old brothers as rappers.
Dylan and Travis are my 9 year-old twins. Although they came late in life, they have infused our family with such joy. They re really into soccer and are happy ALL the time
My favorite childhood memory:
I grew up in San Diego with two brothers and a sister. Our annual summer family vacation was a camping trip in Sequoia National Park. There was one big tent for my parents and two little ones for the kids. . Every night, after singing around the campfire, my mom made us step into a bucket of hot soapy water before getting into our tents for the night. Although it felt good in contrast to the cold mountain air, I always thought it was a ridiculous attempt at hygiene, since we dragged dirt in and out of our tents all day long.
My favorite family tradition:
We make crepes every Sunday night, sprinkled with sugar and fresh lemon juice. They are scrumptious. My mother-in-law came from France, to stay with me, every time I had a baby. I loved her company and she passed on many recipes from her side of the family. The crepe recipe is simple: 7 eggs, 800 ml of milk (the glass measuring cups have ml too), 2 cups of flour, 2 Tbsp of sugar, and the grated rind of one lemon. The only part of the crepe recipe that I don’t understand (and don’t do) is putting the batter under a bed for 4 hours. I just set it out on the counter, covered.
My favorite family moment:
I had one of those it-doesn’t-get-better-than-this moments last December. My four boys were all in Sean’s room listening to some of the songs they had made for the Christmas CD. I wasn’t allowed in since it was a gift for their dad and I. Kevin, the oldest, was reading (and making fun of) a rap song that Travis had decided to write, trying to copy his older brother’s style. The four of them were laughing hysterically, totally out of control. I loved it!!

A Message From Lorle 2/26/08

Oh My Gosh! This is really addicting! It is so fun to browse around and read everyone’s stories that I had to make myself a rule (too many years of being a mom) and limit myself to once a day for only 15 minutes – otherwise I won’t get my job (or dinner) done.

Just so you know, we have created this site so that you and your customers can connect and share your experiences with other women (and men) who believe in the importance of family. Once Upon a Family is built on the foundation of the col… Continue

Lorle I am so happy you are on here!! I was reading your book today (The Happy Home", and I took the test (I am doing the challenge), and my results came up like this:
Okay so I am not sure exactly which is the one I should be doing.
Let me explain this to you ~ I just took the test, and I am a:
25 for Family Educator
23 for Family Fun Manager
26 for Family Organizer
21 for Family Hero
25 for Family Nurturer
I am dead even to dead even on most everything.
Somehow this always happens to me with all quizes.
I guess I will start with Family Organizer since it is 1 point ahead of them all?! :)
What do you think?
Please let me know.
Thanks Lorle, and God Bless You, and Yours!! :)

Hi Lorle, You are so right about this being addicting! I will have to try your 15 minute rule. I really enjoyed meeting you at the book tour (PA) and at the Family Reunion (TX). You are terrific woman with a wonderful vision. I am glad I found your OUAF company. Bobbie Jo Goodwin

JAMAICA WAS SO GREAT!!! I loved making the connections with my OUAF sisters even stronger. I can't imagine missing a trip now. By the way, I'm so addicted to this web site! Yikes I need to start limiting myself as well. Thanks again for changing my life for the better (along with my whole family).

Yes, wouldn’t that be like heaven? You walk around the house and without saying a word, backpacks, toys and clothes are picked up…dishes are cleared off the table and towels are hung back on the towel rack. Dirty clothes actually go into the dirty clothes basket and you no longer walk into the kitchen to [...]

The Power of Unexpected Kindness

The idea of Door Knob Drops came from my sister, Teri, who lives with her two boys in Moraga, California. One year there were several kids on their street that were graduating from some school or another; sixth grade, eighth grade or twelfth grade. Teri and her boys put together some very simple treats with [...]

What Would You Do?

Last night my boys, Dylan and Travis, were helping me cut out Bingo Boards and put together Bingo Button sacks. It was really late and I was trying to get everything photographed for this first Five in One Family Fun email. Normally they go to bed by 9:15 but it was 9:30 and I hadn’t [...]
